Fisheries Ministry Opens Registration for Third Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme

The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has officially opened applications for the third round of its Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programmes. The initiative aims to build technical expertise and foster local participation in reef fish farming and aquaculture across the country.
Officials confirmed that the ministry is running the initiative in collaboration with the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), supported by the World Bank-backed TransFORM project.
Course Structure and Curriculum
According to reports, the 14-day basic mariculture course will take place at the Maniyafushi Research and Training Facility in Kaafu Atoll from the 10th to the 21st of next month. Organisers have capped participant numbers at 15 to maintain hands-on instructional quality.
Reports indicate that the training curriculum will cover key elements of mariculture and hatchery operations, including:
- Aquaculture systems
- Cultivation of live feed
- Breeding and rearing techniques for grouper, sea cucumber, and clark’s anemone fish
- Pearl oyster propagation and seagrass cultivation theory
- Identification and prevention of diseases in cultured marine organisms
- Environmental protection practices within mariculture operations
Application Procedures and Provisions
Ministry reports state that interested individuals must submit an official application along with a copy of their national identity card to the MMRI by 14:00 on Thursday, 17th of this month. Applications may also be submitted digitally via email at infor@mmri.gov.mv. Officials noted that if submissions exceed the 15 available places, selection will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to statements from the institute, organizers will provide participants with accommodation and meals at the Maniyafushi facility, as well as return transport between Malé and Maniyafushi for the duration of the training course.
Reports also noted that training for participants in the second round of the programme commenced last month.
