The Ministry of Fisheries has announced the decision to allow expatriates to work in certain roles aboard fishing vessels in the Maldives, under certain restrictions.
The Ministry stated in a press release that discussions had been carried out with stakeholders regarding the involvement of undocumented expatriates in fishing activities, where the stakeholders expressed difficulty in finding locals to perform certain roles.
As per the new changes brought by the Ministry, fishing boats with certain licenses can now hire a maximum of two expatriate workers with a work permit to work in the boat. The employees are, however, restricted to cooking and maintenance activities such as cleaning.
With the new changes brought to the fishing sector, the Fisheries Ministry has requested to ensure that the expatriates working in Maldivian fishing boats are properly documented and regulated.
