German Honorary Consul’s Office in Maldives Closed Until Further Notice

Key points
  • Germany's honorary consul's office in the Maldives has closed indefinitely, redirecting emergency consular support to the embassy in Colombo.
  • Germany is the Maldives' fourth-largest tourism market, with 107,479 arrivals (6.5% of total) recorded through 13 October.
  • Only telephone advice is available locally, and replacement travel documents cannot be issued for German nationals who lose passports.

German nationals in the Maldives must now seek emergency consular assistance from Colombo following the closure of Germany’s honorary consul’s office, limiting local support for visitors from the country’s fourth-largest tourism source market.

According to the Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation’s daily update issued on 14 October, the Maldives recorded 107,479 tourist arrivals from Germany between the start of the year and 13 October. German visitors accounted for 6.5% of total tourist arrivals, placing the market behind China, Russia and the United Kingdom.

The figures highlight the number of travellers potentially affected by the reduced availability of consular assistance, particularly in emergencies requiring services that cannot be provided remotely.

The German Embassy in Colombo confirmed in a notice dated 2 October that the honorary consul’s office would remain closed until further notice. It directed people requiring emergency assistance to the embassy in Sri Lanka, while cautioning that it could currently provide only advice because Germany had no representative in the Maldives.

The German Federal Foreign Office’s travel guidance further explains that emergency consular support is presently available only by telephone because of the geographical distance. Replacement travel documents cannot currently be issued in the Maldives, creating a practical difficulty for German nationals who lose their passports during their stay.

Germany does not maintain an embassy in the Maldives. Its embassy in Colombo holds diplomatic responsibility for the country as well as Sri Lanka.

The embassy urged travellers to consider the absence of a local representative when planning visits to the Maldives. Its closure notice did not state a reason for the decision or provide a reopening date.
