Establishing an economy resilient to external financial shocks remains the primary objective of the administration, Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer announced during the opening of the Maldives Accountants Forum 2026.
Delivering the keynote address at the event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives (CA Maldives), Minister Zareer emphasised that sustainable economic stability requires sound monetary frameworks, fiscal discipline, and transparent governance. He noted that the accounting profession plays a vital role beyond tracking public expenditure, serving as a pillar to build investor confidence and reinforce national economic stewardship.
Addressing the forum’s theme, “Navigating Change, Building Resilience,” the minister connected ongoing policy measures to the strategic agenda set by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Minister Zareer reported that recent structural reforms aimed at restoring debt sustainability are yielding measurable results. Over the past eighteen months, the government settled USD 1.4 billion in sovereign debt obligations—a repayment volume that led international credit agencies, including Fitch Ratings and Moody’s, to upgrade the sovereign rating of the Maldives.
Looking towards long-term objectives, Minister Zareer asserted that achieving the administration’s target of developed-nation status by 2040 relies on an expanding digital economy driven by the private sector and supported by reliable financial reporting.
Concluding his address, the minister pledged ongoing government backing to strengthen the regulatory oversight of CA Maldives, whilst commending the institute’s latest student intake and its specialised programmes for corporate accountants.
