Maldives Immigration has introduced temporary passport arrangements after technical problems at an overseas printing facility delayed the arrival of new passport booklets.
The agency said the German contractor supplying Maldivian passport booklets was unable to meet the scheduled delivery date due to technical issues at its facility. The next shipment is now expected to arrive by late September.
Under the temporary measures, people applying for new passports can have their existing passports extended free of charge until the end of June 2027.
First-time applicants planning short-term travel to common destinations, including India and Sri Lanka, will be issued emergency passports. These passports will remain valid for one year.
Immigration said the arrangements are intended to prevent significant disruption for Maldivians travelling abroad while the country awaits the new supply.
