Japan and Maldives Discuss Maritime Security and Development Cooperation

Japan and the Maldives have discussed maritime security and development cooperation during a meeting in Tokyo between Maldives Ambassador to Japan Ahmed Mahloof and Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kunimitsu Ayano on 29 May.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the discussions also covered the strengthening of bilateral relations and preparations for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year.

State Minister Kunimitsu welcomed Ambassador Mahloof’s appointment and noted his background in public service and sports, expressing Japan’s intention to further develop friendly ties with the Maldives across multiple sectors.

She reaffirmed Japan’s view of the Maldives as an important partner in advancing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific framework and highlighted ongoing development cooperation, including infrastructure support such as coastal protection works in Malé.

Ambassador Mahloof expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued assistance and outlined his commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in the lead-up to the anniversary year.

Both sides also exchanged views on the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order and discussed continued coordination on maritime security initiatives.
