Disaster preparedness capacity in the Maldives is set to improve following the delivery of new response equipment funded through Japanese grant assistance.
The Government of Japan has provided disaster response equipment valued at USD 4.30 million to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The handover took place during a ceremony held at NDMA, where Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko presented the equipment, and Chief Executive Hisan Hassan received it on behalf of the authority.
The equipment was supplied under Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme, a grant-based initiative aimed at supporting partner countries in strengthening essential public services and infrastructure.
According to NDMA, the equipment will be deployed to support response efforts during flooding and fire-related incidents across the atolls. The addition is expected to enhance operational readiness, particularly in outer islands where access to specialised equipment can be limited.
The Maldives has faced recurring challenges related to flooding and fire incidents, highlighting the need for improved response mechanisms and resource availability. External assistance such as this contributes to bridging capacity gaps while supporting broader disaster management efforts.
The handover reflects ongoing cooperation between the Maldives and Japan in areas related to development support and risk management.
