The Maldivian government has announced its primary ambition to cultivate designated crop varieties domestically and establish their commercial presence across national markets.
The announcement was made by President Muizzu in a statement marking National Farmers’ Day, addressed to agricultural workers and industry stakeholders. In the statement, President Muizzu stressed that expanding local agricultural output remains central to protecting national sovereignty. He pointed out that recent fluctuations in global food prices and international supply chain disruptions have underscored the nation’s vulnerability to external shocks, making domestic production an urgent economic priority.
By boosting domestic farming capacity through environmentally sustainable practices, the administration aims to curb reliance on foreign imports, retain foreign exchange reserves within the local economy, and generate long-term employment opportunities across island communities.
The president explained that the government’s strategic focus centres on reaching self-sufficiency in specific key crops, ensuring that local yields meet total national consumption demands. To achieve this, the state plans to integrate modern agricultural technologies, helping local farmers increase output, improve profitability, and maintain commercial viability.
First designated in 2009, National Farmers’ Day marks its 18th annual observance this year. Centred around innovation and future sustainability, the official banner underscores the administration’s focus on integrating technological adaptation into local food production systems.
