Maldives and Qatar Reaffirm Bilateral Ties During President’s Visit

- President Muizzu returned to Malé after an official Qatar visit to convey condolences for former Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
- Muizzu and Amir Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and Qatar.
- Sheikh Hamad supported Maldivian initiatives including Qatar Airways services, a school in Laamu Atoll, and a mosque in Hulhumalé.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé after concluding an official visit to Qatar, where he conveyed condolences following the passing of former Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
During the visit, Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received President Muizzu in audience. The President expressed condolences on behalf of the Maldivian Government and the people of the Maldives to the Amir and the Royal Family.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation between the Maldives and Qatar, reflecting the longstanding diplomatic and development ties between the two countries.
Sheikh Hamad, who served as Amir of Qatar before transferring power to Sheikh Tamim in 2013, supported several initiatives in the Maldives. These included facilitating the commencement of Qatar Airways services to the country and contributing to the establishment of Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School in Laamu Atoll and Masjid al Sheikh Qasim bin Al Thani in Hulhumalé.
The former Amir also made an official visit to the Maldives in 2005.
The Maldives and Qatar established diplomatic relations on 26 May 1984. Cooperation between the two countries has since covered areas including development assistance, education, aviation and religious infrastructure.
