Maldives and SACEP Seek Stronger Regional Cooperation on Environmental Protection

The Maldives and the South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) have explored ways to enhance regional cooperation for environmental protection. The discussions took place on Monday between Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and the visiting Director General of SACEP, Norbu Wangchuk.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the meeting focused on strengthening environmental protection efforts at the regional level and identifying ways to improve collaboration. Climate change and sustainable development were among the key topics discussed, with both sides acknowledging the need for increased cooperation to address pressing environmental challenges.

Minister Thoriq emphasised the importance of reinforcing environmental cooperation among South Asian countries, stressing that collective action is essential in tackling the region’s environmental issues. He reiterated that a unified approach would lead to more effective solutions in the long run.

Director General Wangchuk recognised the Maldives’ leadership in environmental protection within the region. He expressed SACEP’s commitment to working closely with the Maldives to further environmental initiatives and strengthen regional collaboration.

The Ministry stated that meetings such as these play a crucial role in strengthening both bilateral and multilateral relations, contributing to broader environmental protection efforts across the region.
