The Maldives is making a strong push at the ITB Berlin Fair 2025, with Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim leading efforts to strengthen ties with major European travel firms. Joined by industry leaders, the Minister has held key meetings on the sidelines of the event, which runs from Tuesday, 4 March, to Thursday, 6 March. A delegation of 200 representatives from 89 Maldivian tourism companies is also present, showcasing the nation’s vibrant travel sector.
Minister Thoriq met with German travel giant TUI to discuss tourism promotion and creating standout experiences for visitors, a move aimed at bolstering the Maldives’ appeal in a key market that once delivered around 100,000 German tourists annually pre-pandemic. He also engaged with Edelweiss Airline, focusing on joint promotions and boosting flight connections during the low season to smooth out tourist flows. Earlier talks with Dertour, another major German operator, centred on enhancing partnerships to drive more business to the islands.
The ITB Berlin Fair offers a prime stage for these efforts, with the Maldives’ delegation highlighting an industry that powers over a quarter of the nation’s GDP. Minister Thoriq’s meetings reflect a clear strategy to deepen connections with Europe, ensuring the Maldives remains a top draw for travellers seeking its beaches and luxury resorts. As the fair wraps up, these talks could set the stage for increased arrivals and a stronger tourism economy.
