Maldives Joins Global Fund Board Representing South-East Asia

The Maldives has secured a position on the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, marking a step forward in the country’s role in international health governance.

The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare announced that the Maldives is representing the South-East Asia constituency at the Global Fund’s 55th Board Meeting, held in Geneva on 9 and 10 July. The ministry said the appointment provides the Maldives with an opportunity to play a greater role in shaping global health policy.

According to the ministry, the Maldives will use its position on the Board to promote health equity across the region, support the development of sustainable health systems, and strengthen efforts to combat HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

The ministry described the appointment as a significant achievement for the country, noting that it reflects the Maldives’ growing contribution to international public health initiatives.

The ministry also highlighted the Maldives’ record in disease prevention, noting that it became the world’s first country to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. The milestone was officially recognised by the World Health Organization in October last year.

The Maldives has recorded a number of internationally recognised achievements in the health sector in recent years, with the latest appointment further strengthening its participation in global health decision-making.

The Global Fund’s 56th Board Meeting is scheduled to be held in October.
