Maldivian has signed a letter of intent with De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited to acquire two DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft, which would make it the first operator of the model in the Maldives.
The aircraft are intended to expand the national airline’s seaplane operations, supporting transfers to resort islands and other destinations without land runways. The Maldives is the world’s largest operating market for Twin Otter aircraft.
Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said the new aircraft would support the airline’s service to resort partners and island communities.
“We are proud that Maldivian will be the first airline in the Maldives to introduce the Twin Otter Classic 300-G,” Iyas said. “The seaplane transfer is where the Maldives holiday begins, and our operation depends on this aircraft every day.”
The Classic 300-G retains the short take-off and landing capability required for operations in the Maldives, while adding modern avionics, improved passenger comfort and maintenance features. The airline said weight reductions would also allow for greater passenger and baggage capacity, improving fleet operating efficiency.
Maldivian currently operates 11 DHC-6 Twin Otters within its 25-aircraft fleet, alongside its domestic and international services.
