The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has reason to celebrate as fish collection records reach new heights. Recent data reveals an impressive total of 40,243 metric tons (MT) of fish collected from fishermen as of last week, showcasing a substantial 26% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Among the various fishing complexes, the Addu fisheries complex emerges as a standout performer, boasting an exceptional 64% increase in fish collection. Meanwhile, the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex follows closely with a commendable 27% rise. On the other hand, the Felivaru Fisheries Complex experienced a slight dip of 2% in tuna collection.
This surge in tuna collection has had a positive impact on the financial compensation provided to the fishermen. MIFCO has disbursed a total of MVR 669 million to fishermen thus far in the current year. This represents a substantial increase compared to the previous year’s payment of MVR 515 million.
