Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) began operations at the B. Eydhafushi Harbour Development Project site on September 7, 2023, after being awarded the project by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure.
B. Eydhafushi, with a population of approximately 3,470 residents, primarily employs its youth in government institutions and the nearby resorts within Baa Atoll, which is home to 17 such resorts. Additionally, sports fishing is a highly popular activity among the island’s youth, resulting in a significant number of boats and dinghies on the island.
Despite its tourism-centric focus, Eydhafushi still maintains a presence in the fishing industry. Over the years, congestion at the island’s port has presented challenges for boats arriving on the island and individuals seeking various services.
However, the completion of the Eydhafushi Island Development Project is expected to address these obstacles and have a positive impact on the island’s economy and the general population.
The project’s scope includes maintenance dredging operations of 28,304 cubic metres, channel dredging operations totalling 3,354 cubic metres, the construction of a 402-metre quay wall, a 170-metre breakwater, a 383-metre revetment, an 11-metre by 11-metre ramp, an 18-metre by 2-metre bridge, and the installation of 1,814 square metres of pavement. Additionally, the project involves the implementation of harbour lights and mooring buoys.
The project is valued at MVR 64.67 million.
