President Muizzu has announced that the completion of national development projects across the Maldives will peak in 2027, with additional key schemes scheduled for delivery throughout 2026 and through to 2028.
Speaking on the sixth episode of The Pulse, a podcast series produced by the President’s Office, President Muizzu outlined the current status of the administration’s infrastructure agenda. Addressing public concerns regarding project delays, he confirmed that physical works across various sectors will resume shortly following the resolution of recent economic challenges. He noted that while the administration is implementing a sustainable medium-to-long-term development policy, work remains ongoing to ensure essential services reach every island to an appropriate standard.
During an interview with Avas Media senior journalist Ahmed Shuaau in the second segment of the podcast, the President detailed several key infrastructure initiatives, including local governance upgrades. Having observed that many island council facilities were in a dilapidated state upon taking office, President Muizzu stated that modern replacement offices are currently under construction. He projects that council administrations on approximately 100 islands will operate from new facilities within the next two years, with operations expected to begin by mid-2027.
President Muizzu also highlighted transportation infrastructure as a vital component of national development, pointing to ongoing airport projects across the archipelago and asserting that effective management will ensure these ventures remain financially viable and sustainable over the long term.
Providing updates on major capital region infrastructure, the President confirmed that construction of the Thilamalé Bridge is progressing at an accelerated pace following earlier delays, expressing confidence in its completion in the near future. He also addressed development initiatives planned for Addu City, the country’s second-largest population centre. Concluding the broadcast, President Muizzu identified the relocation of the commercial port from Malé to Thilafushi as the administration’s flagship project, setting a firm completion date of 11 November 2027.
