Reforms introduced to the national carrier, Maldivian, are delivering measurable improvements following years of financial strain, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced during the official opening of the airline’s new seaplane terminal.
Addressing attendees at the launch event, Minister Ameen highlighted the carrier’s recent structural shift, pointing to the modern terminal as evidence of progress aligning with recognised aviation industry standards. He cited Maldivian’s ongoing turnaround as a key benchmark for corporate recovery within state-owned enterprises.
Minister Ameen claimed mismanagement between 2018 and 2023 caused severe operational deterioration, leaving the state carrier burdened with substantial debt. According to the Minister over the past three years, authorities have implemented an operational overhaul designed to restructure service delivery across the airline’s network.
Alongside infrastructure developments, government strategy has prioritised workforce conditions rather than focusing exclusively on capital equipment acquisition.
“The focus is on improving the working environment for employees rather than prioritising the acquisition of infrastructure and capital assets,” Minister Ameen stated, adding that providing essential services for staff remains an operational imperative.
As part of these staff-focused measures, the government has allocated two land plots to address housing challenges facing company personnel, with physical construction expected to commence shortly. Furthermore, workers are currently constructing a dedicated facility to house operational units for Island Aviation Services, the operator of Maldivian.
