According to statistics released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), more than 335 tonnes of cargo were exported from the Maldives through the sea-to-air cargo service last month. The volume was equivalent to 65 TEUs, or twenty-foot equivalent units.

The cargo was shipped to seven countries using four airlines: Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Saudia and Emirates.

June’s total represented a 102 per cent increase compared with May, when 162 tonnes of cargo were exported through the service. The rise points to growing use of the Maldives as a transshipment point for cargo moving between sea and air networks.

The service is jointly provided by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and MPL. It was launched in May 2024 as part of efforts to expand the country’s logistics and cargo handling capacity beyond its traditional import-driven port activity.

Sea-to-air cargo is used in several international logistics hubs, allowing goods to move by sea for part of the journey before being transferred to air cargo networks for faster onward delivery. The government has stated that the Maldives is positioned to develop the sector further, supported by the number of international airlines operating to the country.
