Supreme Court Conducts Hearing Via Video Conference in Maldives

For the first time in Maldives, Supreme Court has conducted a hearing via a video conference call. The first hearing was conducted on 1st June 2020, 13:00 pm.

Employees of Supreme Court, the accused, Judges, and the prosecution took part in the video conference hearing. Judge Al-Uzthaazu Mahaaz Ali Zahir, Judge Dr. Esmeralda Zahir, and Judge Aishath Sujoon Mohamed benched for video conference hearing.

The first virtual hearing in Maldives saw the conviction of a father accused of sexually abusing his own daughter upheld. Supreme Court had handed down a punishment of 36 lashes as a Ta’zir punishment and a prison sentence of six years.

As the case convicted in the Supreme Court was regarding child abuse, the case was not broadcasted live.
