Velana International Airport Marks 59 Years with Celebrations and Appreciation for Staff

Velana International Airport (VIA) commemorated its 59th anniversary yesterday with a series of celebratory events and a gesture of appreciation towards its workforce. Organised by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the anniversary programme featured both ceremonial and recreational elements.

A highlight of the occasion was the formal gathering held at the airport premises, where senior management and staff came together to reflect on the journey of the nation’s main gateway. In his address, MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef expressed gratitude to the President of the Maldives, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, for his continued support towards the airport and its development.

The celebrations included recognition of the operational and technical teams who have ensured the airport’s smooth functioning over the years. Shareef thanked the teams involved in overseeing critical infrastructure, facilities management, and airside operations, acknowledging their behind-the-scenes efforts that allow the airport to function efficiently and safely.

The event also served as an opportunity to honour long-serving employees and those who have played a significant role in the airport’s progress. A special 59-kilogram cake was cut to mark the milestone.

In addition to the formalities, MACL organised a staff night and a fun handball tournament to mark the occasion. These events reflected the company’s aim to foster a strong internal community and boost staff morale.

Established in 1966, Velana International Airport remains the central hub for international travel to and from the Maldives. The airport has expanded significantly over the decades and continues to play a vital role in the country’s economic development, particularly in tourism.
