Mission for Migrant Workers Maldives (MMWM) concluded the 2nd Migrant Workers’ Cricket Carnival, in partnership with Ooredoo Maldives, which also included a Health Camp and a Legal Awareness Camp.
The Cricket Carnival was held as a one-day tournament on 3rd December 2022, Friday, the opening ceremony for which was attended by the High Commissioner of India, His Excellency Sri Munu Mahawar, High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency AMJ Sadiq, Chief Commercial Officer of Ooredoo Maldives, Mr. Hussain Niyaz and the Director of Sales and Distribution from Ooredoo Maldives, Mr. Sachin Sarna.
The cricket tournament which started off with 20 teams, officiated by the Cricket Board of Maldives, was eventually won by the Friends Club Bangladesh, in a thrilling final match against Unity Cricket Club from Sri Lanka. Awards were also given to the best batter, fielder and bowler of the tournament, capping off an incredible one-day sporting event. The awards were presented in the closing ceremony held at Ekuveni Grounds, which was attended by the High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency AMJ Sadiq, High Commissioner of Pakistan, His Excellency Vice Admiral Mohamed Fayaz, High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, His Excellency Rear Admiral Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Commercial Officer of Ooredoo Maldives, Mr. Hussain Niyaz and the Director of Sales and Distribution from Ooredoo Maldives,, Mr. Sachin Sarna, as well as the representatives from other partner organisations.
MMWM expressed its gratitude towards the main partner of the event, Ooredoo Maldives, for their tremendous support in conducting this years’ cricket carnival as well. Furthermore, the Mission expressed appreciation for the exceptional support from the Cricket Board of Maldives, in officiating and conducting the Cricket Tournament for the migrant community.
Similar to the previous year’s cricket carnival, MMWM, in partnership with WHO Maldives, Society for Health Education, Medicos, Health Protection Agency and Life Support, provided free medical screening through a health camp, while awareness on various matters was provided to the migrant workers, through a Legal and Awareness Camp held in partnership with Transparency Maldives, Public Interest Law Centre, International Organisation for Migration and Human Rights Commission of Maldives, during the time of the carnival.
In addition, MMWM highlighted the assistance provided by Ace Travels Maldives in making this annual event special for the participants. Moreover, MMWM expressed its gratitude towards Happy Market, Maldivian Red Crescent and One Online for their contributions in providing beverages, first aid assistance and media & photography services respectively.
This carnival is held annually, to engage migrant workers in sports, while using it as a platform to reach a significant migrant population to raise awareness and provide various necessary services.
As an organisation that was created for the sole purpose of advocating for the rights of migrant workers, the cricket carnival is a way of including the migrant community in the anniversary celebrations of MMWM, which is celebrating its 2nd anniversary this year.
