President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed have departed on a state visit to Singapore, scheduled from 29 June to 2 July 2025. The trip coincides with the golden jubilee of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore, first established on 20 February 1975.
During the visit, President Muizzu is expected to hold talks with Singapore’s leadership to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, urban planning, capacity building, technical exchange, and multilateral affairs. Several key memoranda of understanding are anticipated to be signed. The itinerary also features a business forum and a meeting with the Maldivian community in Singapore.
This visit takes place at a momentous time, as both nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic engagement. President Muizzu has already extended greetings to Singapore’s leadership, expressing appreciation for the countries’ shared journey and optimism for further partnership.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in February 1975, Maldives and Singapore have nurtured a relationship grounded in mutual respect and practical cooperation. Over the years, collaboration has deepened in areas such as aviation, defence, education, energy and maritime affairs.
The 2019 Open Skies Agreement between the two nations enabled unlimited passenger and cargo flights, enhancing connectivity and economic exchange. As Singapore carriers now operate around 20 weekly services to Malé, the agreement has facilitated both tourism and trade growth.
The visit will feature the Maldives–Singapore Business Forum on 1 July 2025 at Capella Singapore on Sentosa. The objective is to highlight the Maldives as an investment ready economy and foster strategic partnerships in sectors such as financial services, tourism, real estate and renewable energy.
Singapore’s open, business friendly environment, advanced urban planning and expertise in sustainable development make it an ideal partner as the Maldives pursues ambitious infrastructure and capacity building objectives.
As the two nations commemorate five decades of diplomatic engagement, President Muizzu’s visit seeks to translate goodwill into tangible outcomes including new trade deals, joint technical projects, enhanced connectivity and strengthened institutional frameworks.
The visit affirms a shared commitment to deepening bilateral ties, enriching people to people links, and working together within multilateral fora for regional and global progress.
