The government has awarded contracts for the development of Bileffahi in Shaviyani Atoll and Vilufushi Airport in Thaa Atoll, along with the survey and design of Milandhoo Airport.
Minister of State for Construction and Infrastructure, Ibrahim Nazeem, and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)’s Deputy Managing Director, Hassan Mughnee, signed agreements concerning the practical works, survey, and design.
State Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Hassan Rasheed, and MTCC’s Chief Project Management Officer, Ahmed Latheef, formalised the agreement at an official ceremony in Vilufushi, presided over by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib.
The ceremony saw the attendance of Vilufushi Council President, Hussain Jabeen, alongside senior government officials.
Vilufushi Airport’s development, serving a population of thousands, is one of 15 new airport projects identified by the government.
MTCC has been allocated USD 20 million to improve Bileffahi Airport and safeguard the surrounding coastal area, with completion expected within a year.
Furthermore, MTCC is mandated to produce a comprehensive report covering survey outcomes, design details, and the potential environmental impact of Milandhoo Airport’s development. This aspect of the project, costing USD 38,000, is scheduled for completion within four months.
Since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s inauguration, development has commenced on five new airports across different islands within four months. The government aims to establish a total of 15 new airports nationwide.
