Maldives promoted at WTM London & CITM Shanghai

Maldives participated in the 37th edition of the WTM together with the partners from Tourism Industry. Minister of Tourism, Hon. Mr. Moosa Zameer heads the delegation together with 168 representatives from 66 companies of the Industry. This three-day business to business trade event will be held from 7th – 9th November 2016. Partners from the Industry joined together under the same objective, to promote the Sunny Side of Life… which is represented at a 276 sqm stand located in Hall 8, Stand AS 100.

Maldives will be announced some major tourism developments including seaplane operations in Addu Atoll and the announcement of the completion of Addu, Gan International Airport.

WTM is the second largest travel and trade fair that takes place in the World and it is target mainly for the travel trade. Through the network of industry professionals, WTM provides numerous opportunities for business deals. In 2015, more than 50,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press; negotiated and discovered the latest opinion and trends of the Industry. Over 49,000 participants took part in WTM last year generating more than £2.5 billion of travel industry contracts. This is a record number of participants WTM catered compared to last five years. It is expected to see an increase in the number this year.

UK continues to be an important market in terms of tourist arrivals contributing a market share of 14.7%. During September 2016, a total of 7,797 tourists from UK visited Maldives. From January to September 2016 a total of 76,083 tourists have spent their holidays in the Maldives which is an 11% increase compared to the same of 2015.

Maldives was also promoted at the largest travel show in Asia, China International Travel Market (CITM) which kicked off in Shanghai.  Fifty Two participants from Twenty Three Companies representing various tourism products of Maldives are attending the show.

CITM is jointly organized by the China National Tourism Administration, Civil Aviation Administration of China and Shanghai Municipal People’s Government as an annual event held alternatively in Kunming and Shanghai.  This year’s event from 11-13th November is being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, Shanghai.  There are more than 2,500 exhibitors from all sectors of the travel industry including domestic and international tourist organisations, hotels, airlines, travel agencies and other travel related companies.  This year the exhibition expects to attract over 10,000 visitors of the travel trade and general public from all over China.  CITM provides its partners the opportunity to meet with the strongest buyers from all over China and to establish extensive business ties.

Maldives is showcased at a 203 Sqm stand portraying aspects of the Maldives appealing to the potential Chinese traveler in colourful images set in a contemporary design theme.  Particular emphasis is being given to promoting the Visit Maldives Year 2016 parallel to the destination slogan “sunny side of life”.  Visit Maldives year and “Sunny side of life” branding are being displayed at prominent locations at the entrance to two main halls of the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

China is the biggest source market to the Maldives taking up 27.5 percent of total market share. As the number of Chinese outbound market is constantly growing and likely to be doubled by 2020 to reach 234 million, sustaining the market to Maldives is of key importance.  259,679 Chinese arrivals were registered to the Maldives in 2016 from January to September.  A constant presence of the Maldives in the Chinese market through platforms such as CITM is vital to sustain the growth of the market.
