Maldives Tourism Opens August with 6.8% Arrival Growth

- Maldives welcomed 55,834 tourists during 1-8 August 2026, a 6.8% year-on-year increase and the strongest gain since February.
- Daily arrivals averaged 6,979, peaking at 7,879 on 8 August, following months of volatility linked to Middle East conflict disruptions.
- Year-to-date arrivals reached 1,283,620, still down 4.7% from 2025, with China, Russia and the UK as top markets.
Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have started August on firmer ground, recording year-on-year growth during the first eight days of the month despite the wider disruption experienced by the industry in 2026.
Figures from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation show that 55,834 tourists arrived between 1 and 8 August, an increase of 6.8 per cent from the 52,275 arrivals recorded during the corresponding period of 2025.
The latest total was also 8.9 per cent higher than the 51,280 tourists received during the same eight days of 2024.
Daily arrivals averaged approximately 6,979 during the period, compared with 6,534 a year earlier. Arrivals remained above 6,000 on each of the eight days, reaching a period high of 7,879 on 8 August.
The early increase is notable following several months of volatility linked to the conflict in the Middle East. The escalation at the end of February disrupted major Gulf aviation hubs and affected connecting routes used by travellers reaching the Maldives.
Tourist arrivals had increased by 4.6 per cent in January and 15.7 per cent in February before falling by 20.7 per cent in March and 25.6 per cent in April. Arrivals returned to 3 per cent growth in May, declined by 12.9 per cent in June and remained 1.9 per cent lower in July.

August has therefore produced the strongest year-on-year improvement since February, although the current figure covers only the opening eight days of the month.
Its timing adds significance to the increase. August falls within the southwest monsoon period and is generally treated as part of the Maldives’ off-peak tourism season. Comparing the same dates across different years accounts for much of this seasonal effect, making the early gain a useful indication that visitor traffic has strengthened relative to last year.
However, the partial-month result is not sufficient to establish a sustained recovery. Daily totals can be influenced by airline schedules, weekday travel patterns and changes in the timing of major source-market holidays. Performance over the remainder of August will determine whether the increase can be maintained.
The Maldives received 1,283,620 tourists between January and 8 August, down 4.7 per cent from 1,347,143 during the corresponding period of 2025. This leaves a year-to-date shortfall of 63,523 tourists. The additional 3,559 arrivals recorded during the opening eight days of August have covered only a small portion of that gap.
China remained the largest source market for the year with 232,148 tourists, followed by Russia with 188,543 and the United Kingdom with 101,391. Together, the three markets accounted for approximately 41 per cent of tourist arrivals. The daily report does not provide an August-only market breakdown, making it too early to identify which markets are driving the latest increase.
The country had 68,322 tourist beds in operation as of 8 August, including 45,115 resort beds and 17,038 guesthouse beds. Resorts accounted for 73.2 per cent of tourist arrivals during the year, while guesthouses represented 22.4 per cent.
Arrival growth alone does not confirm improvements in occupancy, room rates or tourism revenue. Nevertheless, the opening days of August provide an encouraging sign that the sector can generate growth during the off-peak period, even as it continues working to recover the losses accumulated after the Middle East conflict disrupted travel earlier in the year.
