The construction works of the new runway in Velana International Airport (VIA) has officially begun last Thursday. Currently, the construction works of laying asphalt sheets are ongoing. The size of this runway will be 3400 meters in length and 60 meters in width.
This new runway has a depth of 200 millimeters and will have the capacity for the landing and take-off of the largest aircrafts as well. A loan of $400 million was taken from China’s EXIM Bank for the completion of this project.
Velana International Airport is currently going through major changes and developments where a new passenger terminal is expected to open as well. It is estimated that $1 billion will be spent on this project and all the works are expected to be finished by the end of next year.
