World Bank Appoints New Country Manager for Maldives

The World Bank has announced the appointment of Mr. Gevorg Sargsyan as the new Country Manager for the Maldives. An Armenian national, Mr. Sargsyan brings over two decades of extensive experience to his new role, having joined the World Bank in 2000.

Throughout his illustrious career at the World Bank, Mr. Sargsyan has served in various significant capacities. His roles have included Country Manager and Manager of Operations in Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia, as well as Programme Manager for Climate Finance and Global Lead for Clean Energy. His most recent assignment was as Country Manager for Ukraine, based in Kyiv.

Expressing his enthusiasm for his new position, Mr. Sargsyan stated, “I am looking forward to working closely with our partners and stakeholders in the Maldives. My priority is to strengthen the World Bank’s robust partnership with the Maldivian government, to support the country in implementing its home-grown economic reforms, and to create the space for investments in people, climate, and infrastructure that the Maldives needs to build a resilient economy.”

In his new role, Mr. Sargsyan will oversee a portfolio totalling approximately $217 million. He will also be responsible for the implementation of the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework for the Maldives, which is designed to support the country’s key development priorities.

Mr. Sargsyan’s appointment is expected to further solidify the World Bank’s commitment to aiding the Maldives in achieving sustainable economic growth and development, particularly through investments in critical areas such as climate resilience and infrastructure.
