79.7 million rufiyaa was collected as Green Tax in February 2019 as per a statistics report published by the Ministry of Finance.
Looking at the individual segments of the hospitality industry as per the . Resorts occupy the largest sector with a contribution of 72 million rufiyaa. Guesthouses amount for 2.5 million rufiyaa, while a total of 1 million rufiyaa was contributed by Hotels.
In the month of February, the greatest amount of Green Tax was collected from Male City with a total of 27.9 million rufiyaa. The second largest amount of money for Green Tax was collected from Alif Dhaalu Atoll with 9.8 million rufiyaa. Dhaalu Atoll is followed by Baa Atoll, Alif Alif Atoll, Lhaviyani Atoll, Dhaalu Atoll, Raa Atoll, Noonu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll as the areas from where the greatest amount of tax was collected.
2015 marked the first year that Green Tax collection began. In 2015, the tax was only collected from foreign tourists staying in Resorts, Hotels and Safaris. A rate of 6% per capita was only established from October 2016 onwards.
